UNICEF has raised the alarm over a rapidly spreading cholera outbreak across West and Central Africa, with confirmed cases now reported in six countries. Chad’s Lac province has emerged as a major hotspot, with new cases reported regularly in recent weeks.
UNICEF specialists warn that the disease is moving along shared rivers, trade routes and population movements, putting millions of children at risk in communities that already lack reliable access to safe water and sanitation. Cholera is preventable and treatable, but UNICEF says urgent investment in clean water infrastructure and rapid-response health teams is needed to stop it spreading further.
