Frontline aid workers pay the highest price as violence spreads across Sudan.
Every year on 19 August, the world marks World Humanitarian Day to honour aid workers who risk their lives to reach people in crisis. This year the day arrived alongside a stark warning from UNICEF: its 2026 humanitarian appeal for Sudan remains only 16 per cent funded, leaving lifesaving support for millions of children in Darfur dangerously exposed.
UNICEF says an entire generation of children in Darfur is at risk unless the international community responds with urgent, flexible funding matched to the scale of the crisis. Humanitarian staff continue to work in some of the most dangerous conditions in the world, often living through the same emergencies as the communities they serve.
UNICEF and its partners remain committed to reaching Sudan’s children with clean water, nutrition support and protection services, even as access and funding constraints grow more severe.
